Watrustology

Watrustology isn’t just how we define and embrace wisdom, vision, passion and strength. It’s our enduring, unwavering set of values and guiding philosophy. It’s our DNA. And it‘s defined by our core belief that every person matters and deserves our best. It has defined Washington Trust for more than a century. And it’s why we’ve remained a private and proudly independent bank.

We foster a culture of wisdom by attracting and developing the brightest minds in the industry and encouraging them to share their knowledge, innovation and inspiration with our clients and each other. We thrive in a culture built on listening, transparency and trust. We are committed to progress and creating a more equitable future for all who we serve.

Our Mission

We are committed to serving the communities of the Northwest, guided by our mission:

“We will be the best at understanding and meeting the financial needs of our customers. We will focus our unique strengths as a community bank on serving those customers who perceive a distinct value in building long-term relationships with us.”

Our Values

Since opening our doors in 1902, we have been driven to provide the highest level of quality service and financial stability to our customers and employees. We were built with an ethical, sustainable business model that has proven the test of time. When banks were closing their doors during the Great Depression, we kept ours open. When there were mass layoffs during the 2009 recession, we had none. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we quickly transitioned more than 700 employees to remote work and provided contactless banking options for our customers to do our part in keeping everyone safe and healthy.

We believe long-term goals are more important than quarterly profits, and this has contributed to our success. Just as our customers have been trusting us with their financial decisions for more than a century, our employees have trusted us with helping them achieve their career goals, and we have a proven record of providing both.

Giving Back

Washington Trust is passionate about providing the best for the communities we serve through sponsorship support and volunteer efforts. This dedication resonates through leadership and our team members. We encourage our employees to become involved in their communities to make a meaningful impact on nonprofit organizations and the beneficiaries of their services, recognizing that such participation enriches the lives and well-being of our employees as well.

Washington Trust’s Crew in Blue – our employee-led philanthropic committee – takes pride in making a difference and organizing team volunteer and giving opportunities under the motto, “Serve, Support and Enrich.” Community involvement is at the core of our values. We bolster that commitment by offering employees up to eight hours of paid volunteer time each year to participate in activities that benefit their community.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

We believe excellent employees are our greatest strength at Washington Trust, transcending factors such as race, age, religion and sexual orientation. Diversity enriches our workforce and enables us to better serve our customers and the communities in which we live, work and play. We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Professional Development

Washington Trust is committed to recruiting and retaining the most qualified individuals in the industry and a part of that is providing professional development and training opportunities for our valued employees. We offer several formal training programs, as well as personalized one-on-one coaching and development for employees in both leadership and non-leadership positions.
